Role of Regulatory Bodies

regulatory bodies are public organizations or government agencies that are responsible for legally regulating aspects of human activity. Accurate Weighing Scales is licensed under Country Wing Group and is regulated by Uganda National Bureau of Standards.

The role of the regulatory bodies is to establish and strengthen standards and ensure consistent compliance with them. Various regulatory bodies oversee different sectors of the economy and public life, including transportation, education, and the sale of food and drugs.
Regulatory bodies are also known as regulatory agencies, regulatory authorities, or regulators.

REGULATORY BODIES OF UGANDA

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS)

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory regulatory body under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives established by the UNBS Act Cap 327 and became operational in 1989. It is governed by the National Standards Council and headed by the Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of UNBS. READ MORE….

Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets (PPDA)

The Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act 1 of 2003 set up the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA) as the principal regulatory body for public procurement and disposal of public assets in Uganda. The amendments to the PPDA law have introduced several changes prominent of which is the strengthening and enhancement of the role of PPDA in the execution of its regulatory mandate. READ MORE….

Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB)

The Bureau is mandated under the Uganda Registration Services Bureau Act Cap 210 to register all business entities in Uganda which are required by law to be registered. The directorate of Business Registration is responsible for the registration of :

  • Public/Private companies

  • Foreign companies

  • Legal documents (e.g Constitutions, agreements, deeds, powers of attorney, etc) READ MORE….

The role of a regulatory body is to:

  • Impose requirements, conditions, and restrictions on businesses and organizations

  • Draft, issue, and revise standards

  • Conducting inspections and audits

  • Enforcing standards by issuing fines and other consequences for violations                                                                    

Other Regulatory Body responsibilities include:

  • Promoting fair trade

  • Protecting consumers

  • Adjudicating controversies

  • Conducting hearings

  • Providing ordinary administrative services

  • Weights and measures (also known as ‘legal metrology’) legislation enforced by trading standards services places requirements on weighing equipment for use when goods are bought, sold or produced. It covers weighing equipment that determines the final quantity of goods delivered to customers.

  • The legislation also applies to equipment used for weighing patients for the purpose of medical monitoring, diagnosis and treatment, as well as weighing equipment used for making up medicines on prescription in pharmacies and determination of mass in analyses carried out in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories.
